This is one of the smaller "black paintings." I am in the process of
photographing some of the others, and will post them soon. I consider
them to be the first truly personal works I produced
(plenty of influences, but still personal). They constituted my
"Cresson Wall" in 1969. I was awarded one of these miraculous grants,
and Lill and I spent that summer traveling in Europe. I was
contrasting "formalist" art with the more content oriented work to which I was drawn.
