American History
The event: In 1838, abolitionist, Angelina Emily Grimké and others held a rally at the newly opened "Pennsylvania Hall," built with private funds, at 6th and Race Streets, as a place to further the cause of the abolition of slavery. A crowd of hostile people set fire to the building, however, as the conflict over slavery, which eventually led to the Civil War, was made evident in Philadelphia. View at:
