The event:
In 1834, a carousell at 7th and South Streets was the scene of a riot between white and African Americans. It became known as "The Flying Horses Riot" and led to days of mayhem. The irony of a place to "play" being turned into a reason for violent confrontation, struck me as a powerful metaphor... This illustration depicts the riot extending into the evening, especially in Moyamensing, as parts of the carousell were actually used as weapons... View at: History Making Productions Episodes |
