This painting was titled by Hobson Pittman during a critique. All I knew, was that I wanted to use thick paint, and that the figure had to be asymmetrical. Kafka was also on my mind, due to living in a roach infested, apartment at 11th and Spruce. The guy upstairs and his wife had battles every night, and the people in the back sniffed glue with a desperation which frightened me. But my roomate, Jay Miller, and I were totally immersed in art!
A great story from one of Pittmans critiques: Jay Miller was working as a barber while a student and was skilled at "razor cutting" hair. Jay also was tall, with a bushy head of flaming red hair and had an intense, Van Gogh-like stare. One day, Mr. Pittman was about to begin a critique of a painting, and in his humorous way, indicated that he was going to tear the piece up. "Does anyone here have a razor!" he asked winking at us. Jay of course, ALWAYS had a razor- so he pulled it out of his pocket, and stood up, waving it around saying "I do, Mr. Pittman!" People scattered in all directions!...Well, maybe you had to be there...
