Some notes about color and design - F. Danziger
Is all art subjective? Is it all personal opinion? Or, is there such a thing as "good design?" If there is, how do we determine what it is?

This is what I call, the "Three Trees problem." The drawings represent a simple image of a tree against the sky. The question is: Which is the best design?
Think about it a moment before you scroll down to get the answer.
The question cannot be answered without a crucial bit of information. If you chose one of the designs, would you change your vote, if I said the design should create a sense of security? What if I said the design should be very "active?"
The "function" or goal of the design, determines its best FORM.
The left image is symmetrical- often used for stable or iconic uses; the right is asymmetrical- generally the most "active" type of design; the center image breaks several "rules."
All the elements are in one quadrant of the design, and the tree is tangent to the top. But in spite of that- suppose the goal was to make you feel uneasy? Would the center image be best?
